Wu Guobao, a native of Shuyang, Jiangsu Province, is a renowned calligrapher and painter proficient in poetry, calligraphy, and painting. His works are widely admired for their profound artistic foundation and deep aesthetic appeal.
He pursued his studies at the Nanjing Normal University Academy of Fine Arts, the China Academy of Art, and Peking University. Currently, he holds a doctorate in arts from the China Academy of Art (under the mentorship of Fan Zeng) and is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of History at Peking University.
He also serves as a researcher at the Peking University Institute of Historical and Cultural Resources and is a member of the China Calligraphers Association.
Wu Guobao excels in multiple calligraphy styles, seamlessly integrating the essence of different script traditions to form a distinctive artistic approach. His calligraphy is characterized by interwoven strokes, a harmonious balance of emptiness and solidity, and a dynamic interplay of movement and stillness.
He particularly favors the running script, using an expressive and intuitive writing style to convey his thoughts, emotions, and contemplations. His compositions are well-balanced and naturally structured, exuding fluidity like willow branches, dynamic strokes like dragons, and ink textures resembling drifting clouds and towering mountains.
His works embody both the grand monumentality of the Northern Steles and the refined elegance of the "Two Wangs" tradition, presenting a bold yet sophisticated artistic identity.
On the morning of September 13, 2023, the "Literary Spirit and Engraved Dragon – Wu Guobao Calligraphy Exhibition" was grandly inaugurated at the China National Art Museum.
Hosted by the Peking University Institute of Historical and Cultural Research, the exhibition showcased nearly 60 meticulously created calligraphy pieces by Wu Guobao, demonstrating his ability to transform traditional calligraphy into a vibrant and expressive contemporary art form.
The exhibition comprehensively displayed the artist’s creative vision and artistic philosophy, offering calligraphy enthusiasts a rare opportunity to appreciate his ink artistry up close.
The opening ceremony attracted more than 600 distinguished guests and calligraphy enthusiasts from various social and academic circles, including Zhang Xiqing, Director of the Peking University Institute of Historical and Cultural Research.
The exhibition received strong media support from major authoritative outlets such as China Central Television (CCTV), CCTV.com, and People's Artist Network. The exhibition lasted for a week, from September 13 to 19, providing an exceptional artistic experience for calligraphy aficionados.
